Two estranged friends meet in the woods on an autumn night for the first gathering of their high school storytelling club in fifteen years. When it seems they’re the only club members in attendance, their hopes for a big reunion dwindle. As they wait for their friends to arrive, they listen to cassette tapes of old stories from the club to pass the time. But there’s more on the tapes than just old stories.

This play is largely inspired by classic horror anthologies like Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt, and of course, Are You Afraid of the Dark?

It’s been developed as a sort of experiment to test the potential and possibilities of the horror genre in live theatre.

"I wrote Witching Hour Social Club because I wanted to see a play with a lot of fake blood and screaming. Something that was fun, maybe a little funny, but also something that was actually scary.

Not a haunted house with some guy running around waving a chainsaw. Not a horror movie with a bunch of quick cuts and jump scares.

I wanted to make something distinct to the form of theatre that used the unique strengths of live performance to push the boundaries of horror.

Or at least something with a lot of fake blood.

Either way, Witching Hour Social Club is that play."

James Lucey is a writer and actor based in Fall River, MA.

He is a Resident Artist at Burbage Theatre Company and has developed more than a dozen short plays with the company including: Hipsterectomy, Cupid’s Satans, and The Nest

Witching Hour Social Club is his first full-length play.
